The Ritchie Family Version of Come All You Fair And Tender Ladies was collected by Kentucky-born Jean Ritchie from her Uncle Jason Ritchie. Uncle Jason was quite old at the time and his voice was a little unsure. Ms. Ritchie recalls that he sang the tune slightly differently in each verse. She picked from each stanza the elements she liked best and put them together as the basic melody. This song, a particularly haunting Dorian lament about false love, is one of the finest examples of true mountain singing style. It has the ornamentation and modality of a slow air for pipes from the Scottish highlands, wherefrom it undoubtedly claims its ancestry. —Jonathan Pickow Recorded on The Cool of the Day by The Düsing Singers (Greenhays Recordings).
