Jesus, Gentle Savior was inspired by a New York performance of J.S. Bach’s Jesu, Meine Freude by the Musica Sacra Chorus under the direction of Karl Richter, founder of the Munich Bach Orchestra and Choir and, like J. S. Bach before him, organist of Leipzig’s Thomaskirche. It is a chorale of two verses, the second having a descant. The piece may be sung entirely in English, entirely in German, or with one verse in each language.
