
The vocal graces and dulcimer-like accompaniment of A King Was Born evoke an Appalachian flavor (the flavor of the traditional music I grew up with). There is a lively coda in the fugal style of the shape note hymns which, originating in colonial New England, have been popular in the American South from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. —Jonathan Pickow
